Poem for a Friend
This was written many years ago in honor of my dear friend, Rita, who has had the good fortune not to see it until now.
To My Friend, Rita
A daring woman who dances through life on wings of love,
Wings like the little wrens that made your patio their home,
Their nesting instinct no stronger than yours.
As you build and rebuild houses and relationships,
To last a lifetime or a moment,
You make those choices.
My dog knows you and adores you unconditionally,
Why not the man you encountered last week or last year?
Still, that enlightened love eludes you,
Buried under deep snow, away from your human warmth,
Away from the sun of your smile,
Your flashing red hair.
Little Miss Sunshine, keep searching,
Loyalty and sense of adventure irrepressible,
In time, the sun must shine on you.
